How Negative Marking Works in Competitive Examinations
In competitive examinations such as SSC CGL, RRB NTPC, UPSC Prelims, and state recruitments, negative marking is implemented to discourage random guessing and reward conceptual accuracy. Many candidates mistakenly calculate their score by simply taking total correct answers minus total wrong answers, severely misjudging their actual merit position.
Standard Negative Penalty Formulas:
The standard formula used by government testing boards is:
Net Raw Score = (Total Correct Answers × Marks per Question) − (Total Wrong Answers × Penalty Factor)
- 1/4th Negative Marking (SSC / IBPS): For every incorrect response, 25% of the mark allocated to that question is deducted. If each question carries 2 marks, an incorrect attempt costs you 0.50 marks.
- 1/3rd Negative Marking (Railway / UPSC): Railway and UPSC examinations employ a steeper 33.33% penalty. Three wrong responses completely wipe out the full score of one correct question.
Strategic Tips to Overcome Negative Marking:
1. If you can eliminate two out of four options through deduction, probability mathematically favors attempting the question in a 1/4 penalty framework.
2. Never guess blind when penalties are 1/3, as cumulative error cascades can push you below minimum qualifying cutoff thresholds.
